This pre-arranged adventure is an individual trip, meaning you are discovering Greenland on your own but joining selected guided group activities during your stay. You will receive comprehensive travel information such as where and when to meet for the activities. Please note that the Sarfaq Ittuk is a ferry and not a cruise ship. The ship Sarfaq Ittuk

The Coastal Ship 'Sarfaq Ittuk' was built in 1992. It is 73m long and 11m wide. Powered by a 2000 HP engine the vessels steams at a speed of 13 knots. It can accommodate around 235 passengers including crew. 'Norske Veritas' has classified it for sailing in the Arctic. It connects the cities and settlements along Greenland's west coast and is therefore the traditional means of transport used by the locals - a wonderful way to travel authentically and come into contact with the local population.
The ship's facilities are simple and practical, designed to serve its purpose as a ferry. There is a café on board, a lounge area with panoramic windows, a small cinema, a children’s playroom and an infirmary for emergencies. WiFi is available for a fee.

We leave Ilulissat in the early morning by boat heading north to the famous Eqi Glacier, one of the most breathtaking places in Greenland. We stop for about an hour close to the massive glacier wall, turn off the engines and admire the magnificent views of this huge calving glacier. A packed lunch on board is included. In the afternoon we make our way back to Ilulissat.

From Ilulissat you start by sailing south to the beach of Itilliup Ilua. From here you set off with your guide by UTV, driving through the ever-changing landscape until you reach Tasiusaq fjord. From here it is a short hike down to the open boat which will take you deep into the ancient fjord where hunters and prey have been battling for centuries. Soon you jump ashore with your guide and walk towards Saqqarleq Sermia - a glacier that looks inviting but also craves humility. This is where you start to feel like a polar explorer and just want to walk on the thousands-of-years old glacial ice. So that is exactly what you will do. Your glacier guide explains about safety and precautions and takes you through this endless world of ice. Amazing! You will return to Ilulissat in the early evening.

In the morning you will sail to the small settlement of Oqaatsut (Rodebay) located north of Ilulissat. During the boat tour you will have the opportunity to gaze at the most impressive icebergs of the Northern Hemisphere. The settlement once was a popular trading post and was called Rodebay (red bay) by Dutch whale hunters in the 18th century. Lunch is included for you. You will have time on to explore the picturesque settlement with its colourful houses and go on a short hike around the area before sailing back to Ilulissat.

In the evening, you go for an impressive kayaking trip among the gigantic icebergs in Disko Bay. The activity consists in kayaking along the coast of Ilulissat, from where you can see big icebergs coming from the Ilulissat Icefjord. You experience this breathtaking scenery in the most natural and traditional way. Just you and your kayak, paddling as Inuits used to so and some still do. Nonetheless all the safety measures are included: the best equipment in the market (clothing that enables you to swim in freezing waters and the most safe and stable kayaks) and if that were not enough, our kayak instructors have the highest qualifications and lots of experience kayaking in Arctic regions (to participate in this trip max height is 2m and weight is 110kg).

In the morning you will be transferred by boat to the small settlement of Oqaatsut. Here we will go kayaking in Disko Bay. Before we start, you will get a short introduction to kayaking and then we will practice a bit just off the coast of Oqaatsut. We then head towards the icebergs. We will paddle among the icebergs in the bay and enjoy the spectacular views surrounding us. We will have some refreshment in Oqaatsut before we take the boat back to Ilulissat (to participate in this trip max height is 2m and weight is 110kg).

Day 1: Arrival in Ilulissat - Evening iceberg sailing

Welcome to Ilulissat, a lovely town by the UNESCO-protected Icefjord. It's a great day to wander around and soak up the local culture. During the evening hours, enjoy a scenic sail through Disko Bay as it's surrounded by colossal icebergs from its own glacier - Sermeq Kujalleq - which is considered to be one of most productive glaciers on earth! Marvel at these frozen monuments before returning to the harbor of Ilulissat. Overnight in Ilulissat.

Day 2: Ilulissat Icefjord and Sermermiut

You're here to see the big stuff - the glaciers and icebergs. And we assure you, you won't be disappointed. The sheer size of the Ilulissat Icefjord will make you feel tiny. It's a sight to behold as the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier pushes ice towards the sea, resulting in the formation of large icebergs in Disko Bay.

You'll also visit the Ilulissat Icefjord World Heritage Site, where you'll see Sermermiut, a former Inuit settlement used by the Saqqaq, Early Dorset, and Thule cultures. Our guide will provide information about the Inuit culture and answer your questions.

Day 4: By ferry from Ilulissat to Qeqertarsuaq

Embark on a local ferry from Ilulissat's harbor to the remote settlement of Qeqertarsuaq, located on Disko Island off the west coast of Greenland. This charming village is steeped in culture and provides a tranquil haven for visitors. As you stroll through its colorful streets, you'll have the opportunity to admire the traditional homes. In the distance, you can see majestic icebergs and abundant wildlife, including whales, enhancing the area's natural allure. Find a moment to rest at one of the picturesque benches along the shoreline, where breathtaking views await!Overnight in Qeqertarsuaq.

Day 5: Free day in Qeqertarsuaq

Delve into the calm ambiance of Qeqertarsuaq, and be captivated by its stunning volcanic landscapes on an exhilarating hike along the untouched coastline of Disko Island. Allocate 3-4 hours for a self-guided exploration of Kuannit. Additionally, there's a chance you might spot both bow-head and humpback whales from the shoreline, as they occasionally visit these waters. Overnight in Qeqertarsuaq.

Day 6: Embarkation: Sailing from Qeqertarsuaq to Aasiaat

As the morning rises, embark on an unforgettable journey aboard the Sarfaq Ittuk coastal ferry. Setting sail from the harbor of Qeqertarsuaq, we chart a course southwards towards Aasiaat. The Disko Bay area is a prime spot for viewing humpback whales and a multitude of seabirds, including the world’s largest known colony of arctic terns. Upon reaching Aasiaat, enjoy a leisurely stroll through this quaint town, with its busy harbor offering fresh local catch. We then continue our journey southwards out of Disko Bay, making brief stops at Kangaatsiaq and Attu. Night on board.

Day 7: Sailing from Sisimiut to Maniitsoq

Morning finds you in Sisimiut, Greenland's second-largest city, nestled against the striking backdrop of the “Kællingehætten” landmark. Explore Sisimiut on your own before you journey further south, crossing the Arctic Circle to arrive in Maniitsoq. Here, the captivating coastal line and abundant bird life command your attention. Brief port visits include Itilleq and Kangaamiut. Night on board.

Day 8: Disembarkation: Free day in Nuuk

Wake up to the bustling energy of Nuuk, Greenland's capital. Here you leave the coastal ferry and spend the day exploring the city's diverse culture and history. Visit the National Museum to view the ancient mummies discovered in northern Greenland, stroll around the old harbor, or immerse yourself in local art at the Katuaq cultural center. Optional guided excursions are available. Overnight in Nuuk.
