Remark

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, thus we cannot guarantee that you will see them during your trip. However, if you are traveling in Greenland from end of August to end of March, chances are good that you will be able to observe them, but best deep in the winter (from mid November to mid March). If you travel in April it is unlikely to see the Northern Lights as days are already too bright.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Flight from Copenhagen via Nuuk to Ilulissat

Today, you'll travel from Copenhagen International Airport, transiting through Nuuk, Greenland's capital, to reach Ilulissat, a town famed for its proximity to the UNESCO-listed Icefjord. We recommend allocating your initial day in Ilulissat as an open schedule to buffer against any unforeseen flight delays. This day offers a perfect opportunity to familiarize yourself with Ilulissat, providing a gentle start to your upcoming Greenlandic adventures. You will spend the night in Ilulissat.

Day 2: Guided walk to the Icefjord

It is a big day today. You came here to see glaciers and icebergs. And you do not mean the small ones, you mean the massive ones. Well this is what you are going to see today. Standing in front of the enormous Ilulissat Icefjord will make you feel small and humble. An endless amount of ice is pushing down from the glacier Sermeq Kujalleq towards the sea, where ice is calving constantly creating those majestic icebergs floating in Disko Bay. Here, at the Ilulissat Icefjord UNESCO World Heritage Site, you also stop at Sermermiut, an abandoned Inuit settlement, which had been used by Saqqaq, early Dorset and Thule cultures. Your guide provides you with exciting insights into Inuit culture.

On clear evenings we recommend that you go in search of the Northern Lights. Before your trip we will provide you with information on how and where you can best observe the mesmerizing lights of the Aurora Borealis. You will spend the night in Ilulissat.

Day 3: Iceberg Sailing to UNESCO Icefjord

Today promises to be an extraordinary yet chilly adventure. You'll embark on a boat journey to explore the colossal icebergs of Disko Bay, so ensure you're bundled up and have your camera ready. Under the guidance of one of our skilled captains, you'll navigate through the semi-frozen waters of Disko Bay, approaching the awe-inspiring icebergs as closely as safety permits. These towering ice structures originate from Sermeq Kujalleq, the most prolific glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, which releases an astounding 35 km³ of ice into the UNESCO Icefjord each year.

Kick back and enjoy the rest of the day in Ilulissat. Always good to venture out and explore Ilulissat on your own a little to get a glimpse of the local life up here in the Arctic. Overnight in Ilulissat.

Day 4: Transfer and overnight at Igloo Lodge

In the morning you head out to Igloo Lodge which is located 15 kilometers into the back country of Ilulissat. It may not sound far away, but with wild terrain and no roads, the trip there itself becomes an adventure. Enjoy the frozen winter vista as you travel on a snow cat. Just five minutes later, you will head deep into the UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a bit of luck we also encounter local fishermen and their sledge dogs heading out to fetch that day's catch!

After roughly 1.5 hours we reach a lovely cabin which is the heart of Igloo Lodge. Here you can take in the breathtaking view while sipping a cup of tea with a warm blanket and join the shared meals.

The day is at your own disposal at Igloo Lodge. Our recommendation, however, is to spice up your day with the activities listed in our options.

Spend the night in a cozy traditional igloo, and if it gets too cold outside you can always retreat to the cabin with its warm double bedrooms. Since your are out in the back-country, there is no electricity and WIFI, nor is there running water.

By the way, as soon as night falls, this is the perfect spot to be on the lookout for Northern Lights (February to March).

Day 5: Return from Igloo Lodge to Ilulissat

Following a tasty breakfast, we'll get going at 10:30 for our snowcat ride back to Ilulissat. The journey should bring us into Ilulissat just in time for lunch (not included).

Day 6: Day at leisure in Ilulissat

This day serves as a buffer day in case activities have to be moved due to weather or can be used to tweak your trip with our optional activities. You will spend the night in Ilulissat.

Day 7: Flight from Ilulissat via Nuuk to Copenhagen

Today you have the possibility to fly back to Copenhagen or to extend your stay in Nuuk or Ilulissat.
