Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Flight Keflavik - Kulusuk

You will fly by plane from Keflavik International Airport (Iceland) to Kulusuk Airport (Greenland). From here you will be taken by bus to Hotel Kulusuk. Dinner will be served at the hotel. Night in Kulusuk.

Day 2: Aputsiaq Glacier & ice cave

In the morning a local guide will take you on a guided walk through Kulusuk settlement. In the afternoon you will be picked up and guided to the harbour from where you will go by boat to the astonishing Aputsiaq Glacier. After a safety briefing your professional glacier guide will take you up to the ice cave. The view on the glacier is spectacular and during the easy 30-minute walk it takes to reach the ice cave you will have plenty of time to explore its amazing features like moulins and crevasses. Once at the cave you will have more than enough time to lose yourself in this surreal world of blue and take in all of its incredible details.

Thereafter you will head to Tasiilaq, passing spectacular icebergs. Once arrived in Tasiilaq you will settle down in a cozy guesthouse, where you will stay for the remaining nights. The local crew of the guesthouse will invite you to a nice dinner together with your fellow travellers. Night in Tasiilaq.

Day 3: Boat tour to Ikateq & Knud Rasmussen Glacier

You leave in the morning from the harbour and sail into the impressive Ammassalik fjord. After about an hour of sailing, the fjords are getting more narrow and the surrounding mountain peaks even more breathtaking. Shortly after we will stop in Ikateq, an old American military base, also known as "Bluie East Two" during war times. The airbase was operational from 1942 to 1947 and was placed in this strategic spot to facilitate transatlantic air traffic, navigation, search-and-rescue operations as well as weather forecast. When the airport was moved to Kulusuk the US army left considerable fuel drums, vehicles and buildings behind. The rusted relics of the past offer an interesting and disputed contrast to the beautiful wilderness surrounding Ikateq.

Our journey continues towards Fjord Sermiligaaq. Sermiligaaq in Greenlandic means "beautiful glacier". And this is exactly where you are heading. At the end of the fjord the two majestic glaciers Karale and Knud Rasmussen calve into the sea. With our safe boats we will try to get as close as save to Knud Rasmussen Glacier. Here you will also go ashore and enjoy a lunch break with a truly mesmerizing view. We will spend 1-2 hours in the area before heading back to Tasiilaq. Night in Tasiilaq.

Day 4: Tiniteqilaaq - Sermilik Fjord

We start in the harbor of Tasiilaq and sail north along the Ammassalik Island trough a breathtaking landscape, passing floating ice that looks like sculptures. After 1–2 hours, we will arrive in a small settlement called Tiniteqilaaq (which means in Greenlandic “the strait that runs dry at low tide”). The settlement has a spectacular view on the Sermilik Fjord (in Greenlandic “Icefjord”) with colossal icebergs and on the horizon the Greenland ice sheet touches the sky. Roughly 110 people live permanently in Tiniteqilaaq. You will have the possibility for a stroll around the settlement by your own. Afterwards we will continue to Sermilik Fjord and enjoy our lunch with a view on the gigantic icebergs.

We will continue our journey in the Sermilik Fjord southwards and sail around the Ammassalik Island passing more icebergs and return to Tasiilaq. Night in Tasiilaq.

Day 5: Tasiilaq - Flower Valley

Enjoy the morning on your own in Tasiilaq. After lunch we will meet up for a joined walk through the town and the Flower Valley. On our way through town we will stop at a workshop where local artists make their renowned and beautiful handicraft. Further stops include the old and the new church as well as the oldest houses of the town.

We will head further to the beautiful Flower Valley. On the way, we could see as the name indicates, many different flowers, such as arctic thyme, arctic bluebell, arctic dandelion, the national flower broad-leafed willow herb, and many others. We will continue the small curved path along the river, until we will reach a small waterfall. Here we will stop for a while and enjoy the beautiful landscape and quietness, before heading back to Tasiilaq. Night in Tasiilaq.

Day 6: Flight Kulusuk - Keflavik

It is time to say goodbye for now. From Tasiilaq harbour you will be taken by boat to Kulusuk airport, right in time for your flight back to Keflavik International Airport in Iceland.

Very professional advice

  1. Very professional advice, loving preparation in spite of numerous change requests and perfect organization of the entire individual journey by Ásta Mercier.
  2. All flight and boat connections as well as the hotel bookings worked very well (the cancellation of the Ilimanaq tour was weather-dependent).
  3. All documents and travel documents were provided by Greenland Tours in good time before the start of the trip. Nothing was missing.
  4. Greenland Tours is always recommended by us at any time.
